Emergency Obstetric Care Clinical Training
Emergency obstetric care (EmOC) refers to the care of women and newborns during pregnancy, delivery,
and the time after delivery, and is a vital component in reducing maternal and neonatal death. Globally,
75% of maternal deaths are due to five treatable causes, namely:
- haemorrhage (bleeding)
- obstructed labour
- sepsis (infection)
- high blood pressure, and
- unsafe abortion.
One of the key barriers to the provision of emergency obstetric services is the current lack of skilled
providers.
In response, the RAISE Initiative has developed a comprehensive EmOC training package, including training
manuals, which is currently delivered to RAISE partners at the RAISE Training Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
Clinical Training for Reproductive Health in Emergencies: Emergency Obstetric Care is part of the clinical
training package designed to prepare participants to manage obstetric emergencies and work effectively as members
of an EmOC team. This manual is based on existing material and has been updated and adapted for use in emergency
settings, and has been pretested at the RAISE Training Centre.
These manuals, which are available for download, are intended to be used in a comprehensive training setting
complete with clinical supervision and follow-up.
