Training Approach
RAISE clinical training courses are competency based and require active involvement by all participants.
We employ the mastery learning approach, and believe that every participant will master the necessary
knowledge and skills if given sufficient time and appropriate learning methods.
We provide both the trainer and the participants with similar materials; the clinical trainer, or expert,
facilitates the learning activities. The facilitator and participants are in constant dialogue, and
participants are given continuous feedback about their progress in learning new competencies. This
learning environment is dynamic and comfortable because participants know what is expected of them and
where to find the information they need, and have meaningful and ongoing discussions with their trainer.
RAISE clinical training courses employ a variety of techniques, including:
- illustrated lectures
- learning guides and checklists
- group activities
- case studies
- role play, and
- clinical simulations.
An important component of competency based training is behaviour modelling, in which participants watch
the facilitator clearly demonstrate a skill. First, participants learn the steps of the skill and their
sequence, where applicable (skill acquisition). Then facilitators coach participants as they practise the
skill, using anatomical models or role play, until they can perform it themselves (skill competency).
Eventually, participants perform the skill enough that they are both effective and at ease performing it
(skill proficiency).
