RAISE applauds President Obama’s action to rescind the Mexico City Policy
President Obama’s decision to rescind the “global gag rule” is a critical step to reducing the deaths of women worldwide, including refugee and internally displaced women whose reproductive health and rights are too often ignored.
On January 23, 2009, President Obama rescinded the “Mexico City Policy” and released the following statement:
“It is clear that the provisions of the Mexico City Policy are unnecessarily broad and unwarranted under current law, and for the past eight years, they have undermined efforts to promote safe and effective voluntary family planning in developing countries. For these reasons, it is right for us to rescind this policy and restore critical efforts to protect and empower women and promote global economic development. More »
