RAISE mourns the passing of Dr. Allan Rosenfield
RAISE mourns the passing of our friend and colleague, Dr. Allan Rosenfield, on Sunday, October 12, 2008. He passed away peacefully, at his home, after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease”).
As Dean of the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health from 1986 to May 2008 and in his clinical, academic, policy and field work through the years, Dr. Rosenfield was a pioneer in championing women’s reproductive health and rights, in the United States and abroad. For many worldwide, he embodied the spirit of public health, both as a scientific discipline and as a quest for human dignity and social justice. He embraced the inclusion of refugees and internally displaced people in reproductive health programs, and fought fiercely for their rights as equal citizens of the world. More »
