Dr. Grace Kodindo Participates in UN Launch of Revised Inter-agency Field Manual
On February 28, 2011, RAISE Medical Adviser Grace Kodindo, OBGYN, represented Columbia University and the RAISE Initiative at the New York launch of the 2010 Inter-agency Field Manual on Reproductive Health in Crises, held as part of the United Nations’ (UN) 55th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women.
The 2010 Inter-agency Field Manual on Reproductive Health in Humanitarian Settings is an update of the 1999 Field Manual, and remains the authoritative guide on reproductive health interventions in humanitarian settings.
Dr. Kodindo joined a panel moderated by Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, Humanitarian Response Branch Chief, UNFPA. Other panelists included Sandra Krause, Reproductive Health Program Director, Women’s Refugee Commission, and Ashley Wolfington, Reproductive Health Specialist, International Rescue Committee.
An obstetrician, Dr. Kodindo lauded the manual’s grounding in human rights, epidemiological research, and field experience, stating, “The Field Manual shows that it is possible to adhere to high standards of service–even in settings that demand pragmatism and immediate action.” Likewise, Dr. Kodindo highlighted the Field Manual’s thorough integration of program monitoring and evaluation (M&E). In addition to the M&E guidelines that appear in every programmatic section, the chapter on M&E was revised and expanded for the current edition based upon the collective experiences of highly skilled practitioners of M&E in crises.
