Overview (June 18-20, 2008)
Reproductive Health (RH) in Emergencies Conference 2008 marked World Refugee Day by bringing
together more than 500 service providers, managers, advocates, researchers, and policy makers to
address the pressing RH needs in emergency settings. Organised by RAISE in collaboration with the
RHRC Consortium, the conference took place from June 18 to 20, 2008 in Kampala, Uganda.
RH in Emergencies Conference 2008 provided an important forum for participants to share field
experiences, present concrete solutions to challenges, and identify opportunities in order to
improve access to and availability of RH services for refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
At the conference, new program data and findings addressing key issues within the field of RH in
emergencies were presented. The need for good data collection and management, advocacy, funding, capacity
building, and human resources in emergency settings were emphasised.
This conference has been an incredible opportunity to share programmes and strategies, and to reinvigorate
the commitment to reproductive health for people affected by humanitarian crises. The exposure to good
practices, tools, and new technologies made for three days of invaluable learning."
